What other holidays are in December?

December is a month filled with joy, celebration, and a myriad of holidays. While Christmas is undoubtedly the most widely recognized and celebrated holiday during this time, there are several other significant events that also take place in December. Let’s explore some of these lesser-known December holidays and their unique traditions.

1. Hanukkah (Dec. 22-30)

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Celebrated with the lighting of candles on a menorah, playing dreidel, and eating traditional foods like latkes and sufganiyot, Hanukkah is a time of joy and reflection.

2. Kwanzaa (Dec. 26- Jan. 1)

Kwanzaa is a week-long African-American holiday that celebrates the seven principles of African heritage. It is observed from December 26 to January 1 and involves lighting candles, sharing a communal meal, and giving gifts that represent the principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

3. St. Lucia Day (Dec. 13)

St. Lucia Day is a Christian holiday celebrated primarily in Scandinavian countries. It honors the martyr St. Lucia, who is said to have brought food to the poor during a severe famine. The holiday is marked by the lighting of candles and the wearing of a traditional wreath, known as a “stol,” by a girl dressed as St. Lucia.

4. Boxing Day (Dec. 26)

Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated in many Commonwealth countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. It is the day following Christmas and is traditionally a day for giving to the needy and for spending time with family and friends. In some countries, it is also a public holiday.

5. St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6)

St. Nicholas Day is celebrated in several countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, and Greece. It honors the Christian bishop St. Nicholas, who is known for his generosity and kindness. Children often leave out their shoes on the night before St. Nicholas Day, hoping to find gifts and treats in the morning.

These are just a few of the many holidays celebrated in December. Each holiday has its own unique traditions and stories, contributing to the rich tapestry of cultural diversity and celebration during this festive season.
